LEARNING HOW TO LEARN AT SLAM
Each crew learns how to learn in a group setting that requires learning the life-lessons of sefl-reliance, self-determination, time management, generosity, and cooperation through a combination of individual lessons, practice, independent study, group rehearsals and performances.
INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING IN A GROUP SETTING
SLAMROCK uniquely allows each to learn at their own pace - all while being part of a group. Each student is challenged to overcome learning obstacles, gain confidence and be inspired by one-another and our mentors, while performing quarterly showcases as they learn how to be good and reliable bandmates.
NO ONE GETS HELD-BACK & EVERYONE GETS PULLED-UP
Example: a crew of 16 students has 8 beginners, 4 intermediate and 4 advanced students. The 4 advanced students get assigned with the less skilled students, where advanced students get learn how to be a positive role model and pull-up beginner and intermediate Crewmates.
. This is not holding anyone back. This is how our students learn to appreciate and inspire one-another
We know that the more advanced students will learn their parts more correctly and sooner, so instead of them being held back, once they learn their parts, they ask if they can 'pass off' on a part
get to play more advanced music
Student festival-performing bands and original bands come later in the SLAMROCK programs.
Instead of being in a band, Performance Program students are part of
SLAM has three live studios, all equipped with
ample SLAMROCK evening:
As each SLAMROCK grow to 80 students
Crew Members learn how to be a good and reliable bandmate with a crew of 15 others of varying ages and abilities who switch musician line-ups by the song.
This inclusive method allows students to learn and have fun at their own pace.
ATTENDANCE
Because others are counting on you...
-
• Two absences per 13-week season.
-
• Sessions start and end on time, as scheduled. 2 Tardies = 1 Absence.
• You are making a 13-week commitment to learn and perform music with others. -
• 30-days of withdrawal before the end of a season I required for billing and fairness to other students.
'LEARNING HOW TO LEARN' AT SLAM
-
• Sheet music, tabs, and instructional videos can be found online. Ask for help, if needed.
• A good teacher will use the song to teach you the theory and technique in that song. -
• You must be in instrument lessons, or be excused from taking lessons by PP staff.
-
• A good teacher will teach you how to learn the songs on your own, not teach them to you.
-
• Lessons with SLAM teachers will give you more success in this program. Not required. Just a fact.
PROGRAM STRUCTURE
-
• Each group session is called a Crew. If you attend Tuesdays, 6 pm you are Crew T6.
-
• You must learn at least 1 song monthly, at minimum. 2 songs monthly is average.
-
• Students who do not learn at least 1 new song monthly may be asked to reconsider enrollment.
PROGRAM CULTURE
SLAM's Performance Program is both a supportive and competitive culture. This means that:
• Students learn at their own pace.
• You will only get new songs once you learn the song(s) assigned.
• SLAM does not reward talent. SLAM rewards individual progress.
HOW TO EARN MORE SONGS IN EACH SEASONAL SHOW
• When you have mastered a part, just ask the session director if you can ‘pass-off' on the song.
• 'Passing off' on a song means that you want the director to approve you to learn a new song.
• This way, everyone learns at their own pace and no one gets 'held back' from learning.
‘PASSING OFF’ SONGS FOR THE SEASONAL SHOWS.
• Pass off on your songs by the 10th rehearsal, or they will get postponed until next season.
• The 11th, 12th and 13th rehearsals will focus on stagecraft and developing the showcase.
YOUR 'BURNOUT SONG' IS ANOTHER KID'S 'TREASURE SONG'.
• For example, if you have been playing the popular begginner/intermediate song, Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' for a year and new 12 year old student is going to playing that song next, please do not share how much you hate playing that song after a year. That could be discouraging. Instead, help that student learn that song so that they can relieve you from playing it, sooner!
2 HRS/WK CANNOT MEET ALL OF YOUR MUSICAL NEEDS...
• In 2 hrs/wk + practice, it is reasonable to expect to play in a show every 13 weeks.
The shows will be 1/2 songs that you love and 1/2 songs that we will perform next summer in the festival band, if you audition.
• In 4 hrs/wk + practice, it is reasonable to expect to play a show every 13 weeks + summer festivals.
The best way to show other kids that you might be a good bandmate is to be reliable at SLAM.
• When you meet kids you like, ask Terry to schedule a jam session at SLAM. Then bring us your music and who knows, maybe we will produce you!
Performance Program students work year-round to develop their skills in different styles of rock music, including:
